The Hold Your Breath organisation approached us to develop a short show based on the science of tunnels. The show is part of a series of events and artworks celebrating the only road tunnel in Scotland, Glasgow's Clyde Tunnel. Holding your breath as you travel through the tunnel is a custom Glasgow's children have been doing since the tunnel opened.

The show (presented by show me learning's Steve Allman) made its debut at the Glasgow Science Centre and then went on to visit schools either side of the tunnel. During the school events the pupils were challenged to build their own structures based on what they had seen during the show and using only the resources provided (straws, string, paper clips and post-it notes). When each structure was completed it was awarded marks for innovation, aesthetic design and strength - this was tested by placing an egg at the top of the structure. Not all of the structures managed to hold the eggs up and many met a messy end! But we had a lot of fun and everyone understood why some of the structures were stronger than others.
